The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' annual Governors Award goes this year to four networks - ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC - for setting aside commercials and competition to organize "America: A Tribute to Heroes" after the attacks of September 2001. In a groundbreaking and unprecedented way, it was originally four networks which came together as one, sold the idea to their corporate bosses, underwrote the cost of the telethon and lined up all of the other networks and cable stations to simulcast "America: A Tribute to Heroes" That telecast helped bring our nation together and showed the world that we were united and still standing strong during a time of utmost tragedy.
"The Teen Files" aims to enlighten kids, parents, and educators about the important issues young adults face each day. Since its premiere in May 1998, the seven-part series has documented the responses of teenagers when shown the possible consequences of smoking, drinking, hatred and bigotry, sexual behavior, violence, and drug use. "The Teen Files'" vast outreach campaign is as important as the series itself. Months before each special airs, Arnold Shapiro Productions staff creates a campaign to make sure the series is seen by the people who can get the most from it. Since the programÿs inception, ASP has contacted and involved tens of thousands of teachers, principals, youth counselors, alternative schools, police officials, and non-profit organizations.
TLC was selected for its ongoing television series, "Great Books", which highlights the relevence of outstanding literature in today's society, and encourages literacy and creative thinking. The series was the idea of John S. Hendricks, founder, chairman and CEO of Discovery Communications, Inc., the parent company of TLC. An advisory panel assembled the The Center for the Book at the Library of Congress assists in selecting titles for the production. The series currently includes 25 titles, each accompanied by teacher's guide book and curriculum kit. TLC's overall mission is to offer people of all ages an enjoyable entertaining way to learn and satisfy their natural curiosity.
