Synopsis
Rafiki relays the legend of Mufasa to lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion a journey of misfits searching for their destiny and working together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.

Interesting facts
James Earl Jones, who voiced Mufasa from 1994 until 2019, died aged 93 on 9 September 2024. The film is dedicated to his memory. He had been asked to return as Mufasa but declined, having retired from acting in 2022. Before his death, Jones authorised Disney to replicate his voice using AI as well as to use archival audio, specifically with his iconic roles Darth Vader and Mufasa in mind. Although Mufasa: El rey leรณn (2024) did not employ AI-generated voice work, it does include a short excerpt of archival audio near the start of the film.
