The film's ending diverges from that of the book. In the novel, Solène tells Hayes she was merely using him and never loved him to force him to leave, despite actually being in love; he continues to message her, and she refuses. By contrast, in the film's ending Hayes tells Solène they will revisit their relationship in five years, and they meet again at her place of work.
The painting of trees by Solène's friend Sarah — which she and Hayes admire in Sarah's studio and which he later purchases for her — is actually by an artist simply known as "Sarah". Her full name is Sarah Anne Johnson, a Canadian born in 1976.
Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine each took leading roles in Cinderella adaptations — Hechizada (2004) and Cenicienta (2021), respectively.
Solène's office displays a poster of the trailblazing Swedish abstract artist Hilma af Klint, whose paintings are recognised as some of the earliest abstract works in Western art history.
Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine are both enthusiastic Arsenal supporters who play football in the English Premier League. While promoting the film, Nicholas checked his phone and told Anne that Arsenal had just scored; when she asked who had scored, he said it was Trossard, and Anne replied that she loved him. A few days later Leonardo Trossard recorded a video for Anne and Nicholas expressing how pleased he was that they were fans.
Anne Hathaway (Solène) and Nicholas Galitzine (Hayes) both perform 'Somebody to Love' by Queen in Cinderella adaptations — Hathaway in Ella Enchanted (2004) and Galitzine in Cinderella (2021).
Much of the artwork featured in the film was created by real artists. Anne Hathaway and production designer Amy Williams collaborated on sourcing the artwork, with Williams saying, 'We worked very hard to make the art a focal point and to ensure it felt authentic.'
Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine shared the screen with Minnie Driver in a film. Galitzine portrayed Driver's son in Cinderella (2021), while Hathaway had earlier appeared with Driver in Ella Enchanted (2004).
(at about 1h 30m) One of the news items shown on an iPhone screen, headlined "Hayes and Solene Will It Last", appears to come from Horse & Hound. Horse & Hound is an actual equestrian magazine that Hugh Grant's character says he works for when he is mistaken for a journalist in the film Notting Hill (1999). The film The Idea of You has been likened to Notting Hill in a number of sources.
The Idea of You (2024) made its debut at South by Southwest on 16 March 2024 and was released by Amazon MGM Studios as a Prime Video original film on 2 May 2024. The film garnered generally favourable reviews from critics.

A screen adaptation of the novel was announced in late 2018 by producers Cathy Schulman and Gabrielle Union, but no further progress occurred until mid-2021 when Jennifer Westfeldt, Anne Hathaway, Michael Showalter and Nicholas Galitzine were revealed to be involved. The film was chiefly filmed in Georgia, United States, in late 2022 with cinematography by Jim Frohna. Peter Teschner handled the editing, while Siddhartha Khosla composed the original score and Savan Kotecha wrote and composed the original songs.
The boy band August Moon most likely took its name from Duran Duran's song Wild Boys. "An August moon surrenders to a dust cloud on the rise."
