(at around the 24-minute mark into the film) At the introduction, Coach informs Frankenstein that the rear protection plate, known as the Tombstone, is 6" of solid steel. It is made up of four plates, each 1.5" thick, measuring roughly 40", 50", 60" and 70" across and about 48" tall. That comes to approximately 1,972 kg (about 4,340 lb) of steel. Such a mass concentrated at the rear would render the car extremely rear-heavy so that, on the first bump, the front would lift and become impossible to control; additionally, the vehicle would be far too heavy to be suitable for the race.
