Aamir Khan and Rajnikanth have reunited for a film after three decades. They previously co-starred in Athank Aur Athank (1995).
The first major Tamil-language production to be filmed on celluloid since Thani Oruvan (2015).
Coolie is rumoured to be the first film from India to be captured on IMAX-certified cameras, which would also make it the country's inaugural presentation in the premium IMAX format using the full 1.43:1 aspect ratio — the likely ratio employed. Unlike most Indian productions that are merely upscaled for IMAX screens, Coolie is being shot natively for the format, promising an authentic large-format cinematic experience.
The Hindi-language version was originally called 'Coolie'. On 23 June, with the release of the Chikutu Hindi promotional music video, it was announced the title would be altered to 'Majadoor'. After considerable public backlash, on 26 June the Hindi version was retitled 'Coolie The Powerhouse'.
