It is especially notable that Remmick is first seen fleeing Choctaw hunters. As well as being set on traditional Choctaw land, the film highlights a long history of co-operation between the Choctaw (and Native American peoples more widely) and the Irish. The Irish Potato Famine occurred sixteen years after the Choctaw, Cherokee, Muscogee, Seminole and Chickasaw nations were forced onto the Trail of Tears. Having endured their own deprivation and loss, Choctaw and Cherokee survivors contributed several hundred dollars to support famine relief. In 2017 Ireland unveiled the Kindred Spirits sculpture in recognition of the friendship between the two peoples, and a companion piece, Eternal Heart, was placed on Choctaw land in 2024. When the coronavirus pandemic began in 2020 and the Navajo and Hopi nations were particularly hard hit, Ireland made a US$2 million donation, attributing it to the Choctaw’s earlier act of kindness.
