The film is loosely based on a true story. In 1959, Steven Clark Rockefeller, the son of the Governor of New York, Nelson Rockefeller, married Anne-Marie Rasmussen, a maid who had worked at his family's hotel in Manhattan.
When Chris, Marisa and Ty set off for a stroll in the park they take the dog with them, but in the two subsequent scenes — at the penguin enclosure and on the hillside — the dog is no longer present. This is because Rufus was left with the dog‑walker who was sent by Jerry at approximately 34:15. At about 36:50, when Marisa realises she has left Ty behind after she hurried off the bench because of the paparazzi, you can see Ty leaving Rufus with the dog‑walker in the background a few seconds later.
