Zoe's father has a pacemaker, which is short-circuited when their car is struck by one of the electromagnetic pulses. After the car is hijacked and a second pulse hits, the pacemaker appears to fail again, apparently leading to his death. However, since the device had already been rendered inoperative, being struck by a second EMP would not have caused any further effect.
