The Graduate goofs

In several scenes where the Alfa Romeo Spider is driven aggressively, the engine noise has been overdubbed with that of an American V-8, rather than the burbling four‑cylinder it ought to have.

While Ben and Elaine are at the drive-in on their first date, a foot is visible just behind Ben, perched on what appears to be the top edge of the car. It seems to belong to someone in the neighbouring vehicle, but when the camera cuts to a different angle the foot has vanished.

At Benjamin's birthday party in the back garden, his father keeps whispering to him at the kitchen door and Ben replies from only a few inches away. Yet the next instant, when Mr Braddock opens the door for him, he is some 20 feet away, completely clad in a diving mask and hood, the regulator in his mouth and all sound from the outside world cut off.

When Ben tells his parents he is travelling to Berkeley to see Elaine, he is wearing a black collared shirt beneath a brown jacket. While perched on the Berkeley fountain waiting for Elaine, the shirt changes to white, then switches back to black in the next scene when he secures a room.

In the "What are you so scared of" scene towards the beginning, Mrs Robinson's shoulders are slumped to the left. In the following reverse shot, her shoulders are slumped to the right.

While Ben is standing outside Elaine's house watching the Robinsons load the car, he places his hand on the rear-view mirror. In the subsequent shot, a close-up of the mirror shows the hand has vanished.

In the opening airport scene Ben steps past a pillar as he approaches the automatic doors. In the subsequent shot he is still short of that pillar and then walks on for several seconds before reaching the exact spot where the cut occurred.

When Ben is shown crossing the Oakland Bay Bridge on his way to Berkeley, he is on the bridge's upper deck — the deck reserved for westbound traffic from Oakland to San Francisco — which means he would actually be heading away from Berkeley. The only route to Berkeley via the Bay Bridge is eastbound, and those eastbound lanes are confined to the bridge's lower deck.

On Benjamin's drives from Berkeley to Los Angeles, he passes through a tunnel. Located north of Santa Barbara, it serves northbound traffic only; there is no southbound tunnel.

At the University of California, Berkeley, electric bells are not used to signal the beginning or end of classes.

When Mr Braddock introduces Ben and his new 21st birthday present, he escorts Benjamin out to the pool while maintaining an uninterrupted commentary. The point-of-view shot of Mr and Mrs Braddock presents them so that Ben does not hear their voices, as if the frogman suit is muffling all sound. There is no reason why Ben should not be able to hear them clearly while wearing his diving gear.

When Ben is sat in bed smoking a cigarette, he reaches up towards the blinds and when his hand reappears in the shot the cigarette has disappeared. In reality he simply moves it from his right hand to his left out of frame before reaching for the blinds, and you can still see the smoke rising.

At the hotel bar where Benjamin and Mrs Robinson meet, Benjamin makes a fruitless attempt to attract the attention of a passing waiter. Through the glass wall behind them the waiter can be seen pausing as he leaves the frame, then waiting for his cue to re‑enter.

The Robinsons consistently manage to obtain fresh ice from the ice bucket on their bar, even after they've been out at a party for, apparently, several hours.

As Benjamin and Mrs Robinson drive and run through the "rain" near the Robinsons' house, the lawns and shrubs in the background are bathed in bright sunlight.

At Ben's birthday party, after he dives into the pool, the camera pulls back as he goes beneath the surface and it becomes apparent that it is not the Braddock's pool — it is far too deep and wide to be the same back garden swimming pool.
