If she were adrift in the Atlantic Ocean, the water temperature would be about 15°C / 60°F even in summer. In those conditions hypothermia could prove fatal in roughly an hour.
Nowhere in the film is the ocean explicitly named, but a number of details imply the Atlantic. She and Nico are Spanish, their plan is to make for Ireland, and Mia appears to end up there — inferred from her rescuer's accent. Thus the Atlantic is the most likely setting.
Although the tale is intriguing, it contains numerous plot holes. The most striking is the notion of a steel shipping container remaining buoyant. While it is conceivable that some containers (some being airtight) might float, given the number of holes in the sides of the container she was in, it could not have stayed afloat for all those days.
That said, no evidence has been presented to back up the counterargument — it’s largely speculative. The crate is a metal box that can float. Ships are, in effect, metal boxes that float.
