When the camera sits back from Akira's capsule, the nameplate is displayed in katakana (a Japanese syllabary). As Tetsuo draws nearer, it is, as if by magic, rendered in Romaji (English characters).
Early in the film, inside a street-side bar, the lettering on the jukebox changes from "MASTAR" to "MASTER" from one shot to the next.
In several shots the colonel's rank insignia alternates between two stars and three stars.
Shortly before Kaneda escapes from Tetsuo's mutating form, the Colonel's moustache is left uncoloured, causing it to appear the same hue as his skin.
In a long shot where Nezu and Ryu are discussing Kaneda's usefulness to the resistance movement, a couple passing by appear to be heading for the same set of steps Nezu and Ryu are about to descend; yet in the following shot the couple are shown climbing a flight of steps on the opposite side of Nezu and Ryu.
When Tetsuo, having swollen into a giant amorphous blob, absorbs Kaneda into his body he is wearing gloves; yet when Kaneda is shown inside the mutated Tetsuo he is bare-handed, and after he escapes his gloves are back on.
