The film's entire premise is that disabling an airport's communications would leave the aircraft overhead helpless and unaware. In reality, any Flight Service Station transmitter, nearby aerodrome, aircraft radio workshop or other aircraft within a fifty-mile radius could have warned those pilots. There would, quite literally, have been hundreds of radios in the vicinity capable of thwarting the terrorist plot.
