James and his contractor make up a batch of ANFO (ammonium nitrate and fuel oil) to blow up the mound. ANFO is a 'tertiary' explosive, which means it cannot be ignited by flame — it will merely burn. To achieve a detonation you must set off a secondary explosive, such as a stick of dynamite, and that secondary charge itself must be initiated by a primary explosive, for example a blasting cap.
