In the café, Lucy tells the stranger that alcohol is not permitted during the 30-day hiatus. Barrow is a "damp" town all year round; the sale of alcohol is illegal, although consumption and importation are allowed.

Towards the end, when Jake looks out of the window, blood from the opening days of the vampire attacks remains visible on the ground despite several days' snowfall.

The colour of Stella's eyebrows varies as the film progresses.

In the opening scene, when Eben walks into the sheriff's office and removes his hat, his hair shifts from standing on end to neatly combed, then back to standing on end.

Over the course of the film, Eben grows facial hair, while nobody else does, including his 15-year-old brother.

As John Riis sits at his table and the camera pans to his wife Ally in the kitchen, snow can be seen falling outside the window behind her, whilst none falls outside the window behind him.

When Beau sets flares alight inside the building and it catches fire, the blast throws him backwards. A few shots later, the silhouette of a large man—who can only be him—can be seen tumbling through a window. He lands on his back and is still alight, yet in the following shot (now unmistakably Beau) he is on his front and no longer burning.

The film is set in northern Alaska, yet every building appears to be fitted with single-glazed windows.

Barrow, Alaska lies precisely 201 miles from the Alaskan Pipeline.

The satellite dishes on the communications building are angled slightly upwards. Because many satellites orbit close to the equator, dishes in Alaska are generally aimed level with the horizon or a little downwards. For that reason, it is unlikely the characters would have satellite phones.

Everyone is keen to catch the "last flight out" before the airport is said to close for 30 days. While the airport can shut temporarily during storms, it never actually closes for a full 30 days. Alaska Airlines operates flights to Barrow at least once a day throughout the year.

In the film, Barrow shifts from a bright, sunny day straight into thirty days of total darkness. In reality, daylight gradually shortens until the sun no longer rises above the horizon. A daily twilight occurs — roughly from midday until about 4 pm — until the sun finally reappears above the horizon.

The sign at Barrow states a population of 563, while the town in reality has in excess of 4,000 residents.

UV radiation is harmful to plants, so grow lights do not emit any more UV than ordinary fluorescent tubes. Either the lights ought to have killed the plants, or the vampires ought to have suffered burns from everyday lighting.

A single match would not have set the oil alight because the oil was below its flash‑point. The oil would have extinguished the match.

There are no sheriffs in Alaska; instead, municipal and borough police forces, together with the Alaska State Police, handle all law enforcement. Law enforcement in Barrow is the responsibility of the North Slope Borough Police Department.

When Browser drops a lit road flare into a box of other flares, it detonates violently. Road flares do not readily catch alight, and even if one did, the resulting flame would not be large enough to fill a room.

Barrow, Alaska has line-of-sight microwave towers that link its telephone network to the rest of the state and the wider world. Unless the vampires were aware of this and deliberately put the whole system out of action, someone would have phoned for help and brought their rampage to an end before it began.

After Beau Browser drives the trencher into the building and the vampires close in on him, he repeatedly attempts to fire his pump-action shotgun, producing only the click of the firing pin striking a spent cartridge or an empty chamber, despite never cycling the action between attempts. The first click might be explained by him having worked the action after firing his last cartridge, but the subsequent clicks should not occur.

There are several amateur radio operators in Barrow. It would have taken days to track down each of them and stop them from calling for help. Strangely, none of the principal characters appear to take this into account while trying to find ways of contacting the outside world.

Sheriff Oleson (Josh Hartnett) fires his pistol inside a lorry, just inches from the driver's ears. A gunshot measures around 150 dB and can cause permanent hearing loss when discharged that close to someone's ears, especially in an enclosed space.

Although it's set during an Alaskan winter, you can't see the actors' breath in most scenes.

The bag of cannabis at the prison is actually stuffed with black pipe-cleaners.

Most interior and street scenes are brightly lit, even though there is no sunlight or mains electricity. Even if the buildings possessed their own generators, which still wouldn't account for the streets, the characters were attempting to evade the attention that such lighting would inevitably draw.

During the snowstorm, as the group are making their way from the loft to the village shop, the wind is howling, yet the power lines remain motionless. No ice has built up on the lines, so they are not frozen solid.

Certain vehicles do not display number plates.
