Writer-director Hallie Meyers-Shyer penned the title role expressly for Michael Keaton. "I wrote it one hundred per cent with him in mind," she said, "to the extent that, had he declined, I would have buried the script — and myself — in the back garden."
Michael Keaton and Andie MacDowell had earlier co-starred in Multiplicity (1996).
This marks the first occasion Michael Keaton and Kevin Pollack have appeared in the same film. However, both were directed by Ron Howard in their respective second feature films: Keaton's was Night Shift (1982) and Pollack's was Willow (1988).
