The director, Arfaz, specifically wanted a brown donkey to play the character of 'Signal', since brown was the film’s colour and he was determined on that choice. Unfortunately, Tunisia only had grey donkeys. In the end, the Tunisian producer, Alexander Naas, found a brown donkey in neighbouring Algeria and had to smuggle it into Tunisia by road so it could portray Signal.
