Wicked was first announced to be split into two films in April 2022, with composer Stephen Schwartz saying they had tried for some time to keep it as a single film, but doing so would have meant cutting or omitting elements they wanted to include that they believed fans of the stage production and the story would value. He added that it was very difficult to move on from 'Defying Gravity' without an intermission — the number is written specifically to close a curtain, and any scene immediately following it without a pause would have felt highly anticlimactic.
