The Addams Family goofs

Anachronisms

Gomez runs some 16mm home film reels from the 1930's that show him and Fester as children. The film is set in the 1990's, which would put both Gomez and Fester at roughly sixty years of age. Elsewhere in the film, Fester's year of birth is given as 1947, and Gomez is younger than him.

Character error

The Addams family motto in Latin "Sic gorgiamus allos subjectatos nunc," is commonly rendered as "So let's enjoy the wings now". A closer Latin phrasing would be "qui nos opprimere velint, illos libenter devoramus," which translates as "Those who wish to oppress us, let us gladly devour them".

Fester urges Wednesday to "Aim for a major artery: the jugular!" Yet the jugular is a vein; the principal artery in the neck is the carotid.

Continuity

When Fester first emerges from an escape chute, he comes out of Pugsley's — the left-hand one. Later, when Wednesday escapes ahead of the Mamushka, the covers on the escape chutes are swapped. When Tully, the doctor and Fester try to get into the vault and emerge from the chutes, the covers are switched back.

When Morticia returns to the Addams mansion to speak with Tully and is taken prisoner, and Thing follows her then goes back to the motel to inform Gomez, it's clearly night-time. Yet when Gomez is sat at the table and Thing is trying to convey the message, the room is bathed in daylight. By the time they set off to rescue Morticia, it's night-time again.

As Margaret inspects the Chinese finger‑trap with Morticia, she places both her fingers into it, which ought to trap them. In the next shot her fingers have come free of the trap. She then puts them in again, and this time they become stuck.

Whilst Wednesday and Pugsley are selling lemonade, there is only a single sign behind them, but when Morticia walks past to speak to Fester the sign has been moved and another now stands there alongside the original.

In the school play, Wednesday's cheek is streaked with blood during her death scene; however, when she turns to face the audience and splatters the front row, the blood on her cheek has vanished.

As Morticia clears out the cupboard for the charity sale, her hands are lifted in close-ups but seem lowered in long shots.

During the séance, after Margaret withdraws her hand from Granny's (actually Thing, as a prank), Granny is still holding Margaret's hand in the subsequent shot when Morticia reprimands her.

When Thing uses Morse code to tell Gomez that Morticia's been kidnapped, he holds the spoon by its bowl so the handle taps the table; in the following shot, however, he is holding the handle while the bowl end is the part tapping the table.

At the base of the slide, as he makes his way to the vault, Fester's right hand erroneously alternates between resting at his side and clutching at his throat from shot to shot.

When Gordon is 'flushed', he emerges from Pugsley's drain, which is on the left. However, when he begins to chase Wednesday, she emerges from her own drain, which is now on the left after previously being on the right.

After Wednesday finishes preparing the electric chair, she calls to Pugsley, who is seated on the floor playing with a toy guillotine. When he stands up, the seat of his trousers is heavily dusted from the floor. In the following shot, as he walks towards the electric chair, the seat of his trousers is clean and dust-free.

After Fester's initial arrival, the "stormy night" sequence shows a fence and either a large tree or a long drainpipe before the Addams' mansion, yet in the daylight shot of the "next morning" neither can be seen.

While Gomez is tinkering with his model railway, Fester prepares to locate the vault by fastening an assortment of gear to a broad belt worn over his overcoat — among the items are sticks of dynamite and a crowbar. When he emerges from the hatch before Morticia, the belt and its contents have vanished.

Grandmama is shown performing during the Mamushka, and later walks past Tully and the doctor whilst the Mamushka continues. As Tully departs, a dancer wearing a dark hat who is taking part in the Mamushka is visible on the right. At the same time, Margaret and Cousin Itt can be seen walking past them whilst watching the dance.

When the family are obliged to leave the house following the court hearing, Fester watches them as they walk away. In the close-up shots he is leaning out of the window; the sash window above him has two panes of glass and is set four layers of timber above the windowsill. In the long shot, however, the window has a single pane of glass and its bottom sits six boards above the windowsill.

When Fester first meets Tully, he grabs him by the shirt with his right hand and shoves him up against a wall. In the next shot Fester is clutching Tully by the throat using his left hand. In the following shot, as he turns Tully upside down, it's his right hand again.

Plot holes

Spoiler!

Margaret and Tully appear to have a son — we see Margaret wiping the face of a little boy who is dressed as an elf in the school play.

However, the child vanishes after Tully apparently dies and Margaret begins to see Cousin It. She turns up at the Addamses' for Halloween without him, and he cannot be staying with his father, who, even if he isn't dead, would be in prison.

Also, in the sequel Ценности семейки Аддамс (1993), Margaret shows off her new baby with Cousin It and the previously seen older son is again nowhere to be found.

Spoiler!

Tully recounts to "Gordon" and Craven the account of how Fester vanished. Yet by that stage Craven alone knows the true circumstances of how she came upon Gordon. It is hard to imagine she would not have been wary when a young man bearing such a striking resemblance to Fester turned up at the same time Fester disappeared. She would at least have entertained the possibility they were the same person and taken steps to prevent him from realising the truth.
