In 2012, Anurag Kashyap was developing a film about Punjabi folk singer Amar Singh Chamkila. Kunal Kapoor had been signed to play the lead, with Amit Trivedi lined up as the composer. The project was ultimately shelved.
Parineeta Chopra is said to have withdrawn from Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal (2023) in order to devote her time to Amar Singh Chamkila.
This is the fourth collaboration between Imtiaz Ali, A. R. Rahman and Irshad Kamil, following Rockstar, Highway & Tamasha.
Parineeti Chopra and Diljit Dosanjh have recorded a total of fifteen songs for the film. Regarding this, Chopra said, "One of the chief reasons I accepted this film was that I would be performing roughly fifteen songs for it."
It will be released straight on to Netflix.
The film represents Imtiaz Ali's comeback to directing following a four-year hiatus.
Vocalist Mohit Chauhan is shown on-screen during the opening credit.
The 2023 Punjabi-language film Jodi, which also features Diljit Dosanjh, drew its inspiration from Chamkila's life.
The location where Chamkila and Amarkot are depicted as being shot in the film is the very same place where they were actually shot in real life.
Singer Dalher Mehendi had criticised Daljit Dosanjh for cutting his hair for the film.
