The casting of Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni as Lily and Ryle drew criticism from fans because, in the novel, Lily is 23 and Ryle 30, while Lively was 35 and Baldoni 39. Author Colleen Hoover said in an interview that she opted to make the characters older for the film to correct an error from the book. She explained that when she wrote It Ends With Us the new‑adult genre was very popular and she had been contracted to create college‑age characters, which left Lily unusually young. Hoover admitted she hadn’t realised neurosurgeons undertake six to twelve years of training and that it’s implausible for a neurosurgeon to be in their twenties; as the movie was being developed she recognised the need to age them and accepted responsibility for the original mistake.
