Anachronisms

Miller is seen wearing a Casio G-Shock wristwatch, model AWG-591MS-1A, which was later authenticated by Universal and subsequently awarded as a prize in a competition. The model was first released in 2007 and therefore could not have existed in 2003–2004.

A Stryker ICV is briefly visible passing through the background of the airport scene. This sequence is set in the film long before the clip of George W. Bush's "Mission Accomplished" speech, which occurred on 1 May 2003. The Stryker, however, was not deployed until October/November 2003. That is at least five months after the Bush address and well beyond the period depicted in the airport scene.

As Miller leaves the briefing with the General, sand-coloured CH-47 Chinooks are visible hovering in the background. CH-47s did not carry sand-coloured paint schemes in 2003.

When Chief Miller encounters Martin Brown by the pool, the boom is visible in the reflection on Miller's sunglasses.

Character error

Spoiler!

In a deleted scene, CW2 Miller tells Mrs. Hamza that her husband has died; she is shouting at him while Freddy translates her words into English. At one point she repeats the phrase "Wayn Abu Alatfahl?!?", which literally means "Where is the father of the children?!?" and, more loosely, "Where is the father of my children??". Freddy renders it in English as "You Americans have lost your honour!"

At approximately 57:00 a soldier carries out a very cursory frisk/pat-down on Freddy. After removing his cigarettes from his pocket, Freddy is immediately permitted to continue. The soldier ought to have rechecked the pocket to ensure it was empty.

Continuity

Spoiler!

Towards the end of the film, CWO Miller sends an email to Wall Street Journal writer Lawrie Dayne. In the message he types "See attached", yet no attachment is visible in the initial email; when the scene cuts back to the computer screen a document is open and an attachment icon appears in the email where it had not been before.

After President Bush's announcement is shown on television, a blonde woman wearing a green/blue shirt is seen standing and applauding. In the subsequent shot the same woman appears seated, talking animatedly with others at her table.

When Chief Miller and his MET team are about to raid the first site for WMDs, they are shown wearing a DCU uniform (BDU-styled uniform featuring a 3-colour desert camouflage pattern, also known as 'coffee-stains pattern') just before they enter the building. Whilst inside, Miller and his team are all wearing woodland camouflage BDU uniforms. When they emerge, they are once more seen wearing DCU uniforms. (This is not a continuity error. The team dons MOPP/JLIST chemical-warfare suits to sweep the building — at the time, such suits were typically only readily available in woodland camouflage.)

When Chief Miller catches up with Freddy after he runs off with the notebook, his right knee pad is visible slipped down to his ankle, but after a brief cutaway to Freddy it is back up at knee level.

The one-star general seated beside Clark Poundstone during the meeting near the start of the film is initially displaying the Combat Infantryman's Badge upside down. Shortly afterwards the badge is positioned the correct way up.

Errors in geography

Like most films set in the Middle East, this film was shot in Morocco. The streets are filled with French cars you would not see in Iraq, and there are scenes of men in crowds wearing typical Moroccan dress.

Factual errors

On the Google results screen that appears after Miller's search for information about Lawrie Dayne's WMD articles, every URL is for www.twsj.com except one, which is shown as www.twsj.coml. The "coml" suffix is not a recognised top-level domain, so that URL would not be credible in reality.

When Miller's team pulls up at the bus station, Perry is wearing a baseball cap displaying the US flag. However, the flag is reversed — the stars sit on the right-hand side, resembling the flag patch as worn on the right shoulder; on caps the flag should be oriented the conventional way, with the stars on the left-hand side.

Although the dialogue refers to Jonathan Vaught as "Captain Vaught" and his uniform bears Captain's insignia, the credits nonetheless list him as "Colonel Jonathan Vaught".

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

When Miller visits the prison to attempt the bribe, the guard addresses him as "Sir", which would suggest he is a Navy Chief (E-7 to E-9). However, soldiers or Marines would not normally address a non-commissioned officer as "Sir".

In reality Miller is an Army Chief Warrant Officer (CW2–CW5), not a Navy Chief. Army Chief Warrant Officers are properly addressed as "Ma'am" or "Sir".

When Miller notices that his contact inside the prison is having a medical emergency, he calls for a medic (US Army). It seems unlikely to me that a Navy chief would use that phrase; a Navy chief would normally call for a corpsman. It's possible he could remain calm enough to make that distinction, but that seems improbable.

Miller is, in fact, an Army Chief Warrant Officer, not a Navy chief, and so would use the term medic rather than corpsman.

During the film, Daman's character is called "Chief", even though he is a Chief Warrant Officer (CW2) in the US Army. In the Marines, Coast Guard and Navy it is regarded as highly disrespectful to address anyone by anything other than their correct rank or rate, or by an accepted abbreviation (in this instance, 'CWO'). In the Army, however, addressing a Chief Warrant Officer (CW2 through CW5) as "Chief" is an appropriate form of address (as are "Mr", "Mrs", "Miss" and "Ms"), as set out in Army Command Policy. Even before the Army formally codified "Chief" as a correct form of address, it was nonetheless a social convention within the Army to refer to Chief Warrant Officers as "Chief".
