Biography of Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman, an Australian actor, was born on 12th October 1968 in Sydney, New South Wales. His parents, Grace McNeil and Christopher John Jackman were both English having moved to Australia from the UK shortly before Hugh’s birth. Since he was born to UK-born parents, he also holds British citizenship in addition to his Australian citizenship.

He received his primary education from Pymble Public School and went to the all-boys Knox Grammar School for secondary education. In 1987, he took a gap year in which he worked as a physical education teacher at Uppingham School in England. For his undergraduate BA degree that he obtained in communication, he went to the University of Technology, Sydney, and graduated in 1991.

After completing his BA degree, he took a one-year course “The Journey” at the Actors’ Centre in Sydney. Moreover, he also attended Western Australian Academy for Performing Arts to pursue drama after which he starred in Correlli (1995), a 10-part drama series on ABC, playing opposite to Deborra-Lee Furness, his future wife with whom he married in 1996. The couple had to go through two miscarriages, and Hugh termed the point as the most difficult phase in his life. Their two children Oscar Maximilian and Eva Eliot Jackman are both adopted.

Jackman rose to prominence from his long-running role in the X-Men film series (2000-2017), a superhero franchise, playing the character of Wolverine. For his role in the X-Men series, he earned a Guinness World Record for “longest career as a live-action Marvel superhero” which was broken in four years later in 2021. He went on to act in numerous films, most notably, Tom Hooper directed Les Misérables (2012), for which he received his first Academy Award Nomination for Best Actor along with his first Best Actor award for Golden Globe Award. Moreover, Hugh also took part in Broadway theatre and for his role in The Boy from Oz, he received his first Tony Award. Later, he went on to host Tony Awards four times and for one of these appearances, he also earned an Emmy Award. In 2009, Hugh Jackman got the opportunity to host the 81st Academy Awards. Some of his most prominent movies are Kate & Leopoold (2001) for which he was nominated for Golden Globe’s Best Actor, Swordfish (2001), Christopher Nolan’s mystery thriller The Prestige (2006), and many more. On the other hand, being an accomplished singer, he starred in the Australian production of Beauty and the Beast as Gaston. His last appearance was in Florian Zellar’s directed Drama movie The Son (2022).

Hugh takes a keen interest in philanthropist work with a long-time supporter of Microcredit, a non-profit organization providing small loans to emerging entrepreneurs in developing countries. The actor even uses his Twitter account for charity purposes.
