A Clockwork Orange goofs

Audio/visual unsynchronised

When the two policemen attempt to drown Alex in the water trough, his voice remains audible.

Character error

Alex's surname is inconsistent (see trivia). When he is imprisoned he gives his name as DeLarge, whilst newspaper reports refer to him as Burgess.

Alex notes that the opera singer's voice makes "all the malankey little hairs" on his skin stand on end. In the Nadsat argot he uses, "malankey" already means "little", so his remark effectively amounts to a reference to his "little little hairs".

Continuity

Moments before the altercation between Alex and Miss Weathers at the health farm, the room is packed with cats. As the camera pans during their scuffle, it becomes clear the cats have vanished from the space. The animals then inexplicably reappear straight after the confrontation.

On the first occasion Frank pours the wine, he fills the glass to the same level twice. Afterwards the amount in the glass falls, despite Alex not having drunk any.

In the Ludovico sequence, Alex's voice-over states he cannot move his eyes, yet he does so later.

When Alex is reading from the Bible and asks the priest to speak to him in private, the priest is shown laying a hand on Alex's shoulder; in another cut he is seen preparing to lay his hand on him.

The sandal worn by Billy Boy's hostage, which laces up to her knee, shifts from her right leg to her left and then back to her right whilst she runs away after Alex and his gang interrupt the attempted rape.

(at around 33 mins) The water in the flat-lot marina goes through several changes in turbulence: small waves at first, then calming as Dim falls, and ultimately becoming completely still when he strikes the water.

When Mrs Alexander is stripped, her shoes are removed and lie mere inches from her. In the subsequent shot, however, they are a foot or two away from her feet.

Crew or equipment visible

During the scuffle between Alex and the Cat Lady inside the house, the camera's shadow is visible on them both.

Factual errors

The writer's typewriter appears to have roughly ten or more sheets of paper loaded onto the roller. Even if one were trying to produce carbon copies, the practical limit would be three sheets of paper with two thin sheets of carbon between them. However, there are no signs that any carbon paper was used at this desk.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

At 19m 45s Alex's mum is meant to be shouting at him from outside his bedroom door. She seems to be shouting at the inside of a front door (fitted with two locks and a handle), but it is later revealed that Alex has added extra locks to his bedroom door, including a combination-dial lock.

Revealing mistakes

Spoiler!

In the final hospital scene, two large loudspeakers are placed at the foot of Alex's bed. One of the actors gives the right-hand speaker a light bump and it moves easily, showing that it is merely an empty box.

At the start of the film it's cold enough to see the breath of Alex and his droogs, yet when the tramp speaks we don't see his breath.

All the newspaper items shown are simply photographs, headlines or lead paragraphs laid over the original copy. One report about Alex, for instance, refers to "the Frothblowers Association and the Striptease Lovers' Association".

Spoiler!

After Alex attempts to take his own life, we see him in hospital with what looks like a tan line from swimming trunks (or sports shorts).

As noted above, the newspaper pages shown are merely photographs, headlines or lead paragraphs superimposed on the original text. The front page of The Daily Telegraph with the headline "'Crime cure' will strengthen law & order policy" includes a statement claiming that the paper sold 1,393,287 copies per day in August 1970 (the year the scene was filmed), an increase of 19,231 copies compared with August 1969.
