Biography of Charlie Hunnam

Charles Matthew Hunnam, son of company entrepreneur Jane (Bell) and scrap metal merchant William (Bell) Hunnam, was born on April 10, 1980, in Newcastle, England. When he was 12 years old, his mother remarried, and he and his siblings relocated to Melmerby, Cumbria. Because of his rough behavior as a teen (playing rugby and fighting with peers), he was kicked out of the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Penrith, Cumbria, and was forced to finish his studies and final exams at home. He later pursued a degree in filmmaking and screenwriting at what is now the University of Cumbria's Cumbria College of Art and Design in Carlisle. He majored in film theory and history and minored in the performing arts. He made his debut TV appearance on "Byker Grove" when he was only 18 years old (1989). As Jackson "Jax" Teller, he became well-known after being nominated twice for the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Actor on television for his work on "Sons of Anarchy" (2008-2014).

His appearance as the love-struck Nathan Maloney in the British sitcom "Queer as Folk" catapulted him to stardom (1999). Despite appearing in a number of indie films and TV series, as well as auditions for major motion pictures like "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones" (2002), Charlie didn't get widespread recognition until 2002, when he starred with Katie Holmes in the suspense thriller "Abandon" (2002). Famous for his role as Lloyd Haythe on the Fox series "Undeclared," he has a diversified acting resume (2001–2002).

Hunnam first met Katharine Towne, daughter of Julie Payne and Robert Towne, at an audition for "Dawson's Creek" back in 1999. They started dating for a total of three weeks before getting married in Sin City. He dated Sophie Dahl, Stella Parker, and Georgina Townsley afterward. He has been together with an artist Morgana McNelis since 2005.

"Nicholas Nickleby" based on The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens, was his first starring part in a movie (2002). Next, he appeared as a major player in the well-acted, adapted drama "Cold Mountain" (2003). He appeared in "Green Street Hooligans" in 2005 and in "Children of Men" in 2006. He calls these three movies his "trilogy of mad men."

Kurt Sutter saw Charlie in his position as the protagonist of "Green Street Hooligans" and cast him in the lead part of "Sons of Anarchy." The show about a rogue motorcycle gang blew away the competition, becoming FX's highest-rated series ever. Charlie's first leading role in a successful film, "Pacific Rim," came after he became a household name on American television.

In addition to playing Nicholas Nickleby in 2002 and the titular part in "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword" in 2017, Hunnam has starred in a number of films, including the lead role in "The Lost City of Z" (2016). He played Percy Fawcett in "The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)," William "Ironhead" Miller in "Triple Frontier" (2019). Appeared in The Gentlemen (2019), and Last Looks (2022). He is currently filming Zack Snyder's "Rebel Moon."
