Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch was born in London on 19th July 1976. Both his parents were also actors. He is the grandchild of submarine captain Henry Carlton Cumberbatch and the great-grandson of the politician Henry Arnold Cumberbatch CMG.
He has worked in film, theater, and aviation. Whereas he has also lent his voice to characters in the "The Simpsons" show and "The Hobbit" film series. Critics complimented his performance as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC TV series "Sherlock."
He is married to Sophi Hunter, and the couple has two kids, Christopher Carlton and Hal. His childhood was mostly spent in boarding schools.
He attended "Harrow School" and was a member of the school's "Rattigan Society." At 12, Benedict Cumberbatch played Titania in "A Midsummer Night's Dream." He also holds a master’s degree in classical acting from the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts.
Cumberbatch took a year off to teach English in Darjeeling, India, and later he studied drama at the Victoria University of Manchester, currently named Manchester University.
In 2001, Benedict Cumberbatch began a successful theatre career, during which he starred in numerous famous plays. As a result of his outstanding performance as George Tesman in the drama "Hedda Gabler" in 2005, he was nominated for the "Olivier Award" in the "Best Performance in a Supporting Role" category.

As an actor, he received his third nomination for the "Laurence Olivier Award" in 2015 for his performance in Shakespeare's "Hamlet" at London's Barbican Theatre.
He essayed the role of Edward Han in 2003 'Cambridge Spies.' The same year, he played Rory in 'Fortysomething.' However, it was not until 2004 that he got his first major breakthrough TV role. He played Stephen Hawking in 'Hawking.' Benedict was nominated for BAFTA's 'Best Actor' for his role as Stephen Hawking.
Benedict Cumberbatch shared the screen with Tom Hardy in 'Stuart: A Life Backwards' In September 2007, which was aired on BBC. He also played a role in BBC’s 2008 miniseries ‘The Last Enemy.’
His performance garnered him a 'Satellite Award' nomination for 'Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV Film.' Benedict Cumberbatch was in "Atonement" and "The Other Boleyn Girl." He played Darwin's friend Joseph Hooker in 'Creation'
He was also a part of 'The Whistleblower' and 'Four Lions,' which aired in 2010. Larysa Kondracki directed the Canadian-German-American biopic ‘The Whistleblower.’ 2011's spy thriller ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ also starred Benedict Cumberbatch. The same year, he appeared in 'War Horse.' Benedict Cumberbatch essayed the role of Smaug and the Necromancer in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy.
He reprised his role of Smaug in 'Desolation of Smaug' (2013) and 'The Battle of Five Armies' (2014). Benedict Cumberbatch dated Olivia Poulet, before parting ways in 2011. Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter got engaged in November 2014, and later on February 14th, 2015, they got married.
