Her performance in the thriller "Freeway" (1996) opposite Kiefer Sutherland, gave her a bit more honorable respect and began to pave her way to becoming a rising star. She got booked for a co-star role for the coming-of-age comedy drama, "Pleasantville" (1998) alongside Toby Maguire, about two 90s teens who get transported to the 1950s forcing them to adapt their modern teenage tendencies to a more humble lifestyle. From this point forward, it was a "sky's the limit" situation for young Reese.

The following year, Witherspoon played a plot protagonist role in the cult classic film "Cruel Intentions" (1999) acting alongside her newlywed spouse at the time, Ryan Phillippe. They met at her birthday party in 1997, got engaged in 1998, and were married by June 1999. They had two children together but unfortunately, separated by November 2006 due to irreconcilable differences. That same year, she acted in another successful film "Election" opposite Matthew Broderick, and received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. In 2000, Reese made honorable appearances in cult classic films like Little Nicky and American Psycho. It wasn't until 2001 when Reese would land her big break for starring in the blockbuster hit "Legally Blonde" and its sequel in 2003. By 2005, Witherspoon was awarded her first Oscar for Best Actress co-starring alongside Joaquin Phoenix for the film "Walk the Line", a biopic about Johnny Cash.

In 2007, Reese Witherspoon was dating famous actor, Jake Gyllenhaal. The two co-starred in the film “Rendition” which was filmed in the same year. They were together until 2009. Aside from acting, Reese went on to shift her focus to other projects. She became interested in producing and founded her own production company called Pacific Standard, focusing on funding films with strong female lead roles. She took part in producing the blockbuster film, Gone Girl (2014). In 2016, RW obtained a voice acting role for the animated movie “Sing.” The film was Witherspoon’s biggest commercial success, earning over $200 million domestically and $600 million worldwide.  By 2021, Forbes magazine named the star to be the richest actress in the world with an estimated net worth of $400 million.
