Biography of Helena Bonham Carter

Helena Bonham Carter, a versatile English actress, was born on 26th May 1966 in London, England. She was born to Elena, who was a psychotherapist, and Raymond, who was a grandson of Herbert H. Asquith, a former Prime Minister of England. Helena attended South Hampstead High School before completing her A Levels from Westminster School in London. She once claimed that college officials from King’s College, Cambridge denied her admission to the college thinking that in order to pursue her acting career she might drop out before completing her studies. 

Before the age of 16, when she debuts her professional acting career by appearing in a television commercial playing Juliet, she has no formal acting experience. She received this role when she entered a national poetry competition and used the winning prize to enter her photo in the actors’ casting directory “Spotlight”. But her more professional acting experience came when she played a small role in the film A Patter of Roses (1983). Later, in 1985, she received a lead role in the movie A Room with a View (1985) which brought her to prominence. A year later, she was cast as the title character in Trevor Nunn’s directed Lady Jane (1986) which received mixed reviews from film critics.

Having appeared in several blockbusters and independent films, she has received many nominations and won several awards including an International Emmy Award and nominations for Academic Awards. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress while playing Kate Croy in the Iain Softley’s directed The Wings of the Dove (1997). Moreover, she was once again nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for the role of Queen Elizabeth in The King’s Speech (2010). Similarly, Helena won an International Emmy Award for Best Actress for her role in James Hawes’s directed biographical film Enid (2009). Some of Helena Carter’s other prominent films include Fight Club (1999), the Harry Potter series (2007-2011)Alice in Wonderland (2010), Cinderella (2015), Ocean’s 8 (2018), and many more. She is currently busy filming for a mystery film Enola Holmes 2 which is a sequel to Enola Holmes (2020).   

Helena Carter, in 1994, met Kenneth Branagh, a British filmmaker, on the set of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1994). Their affair started although Kenneth at that time was still married to Emma Thompson, an actress. Once the affair was revealed, Kenneth and Emma got divorced. Four years later, in 1999, Helena and Branagh also got separated. In 2001, Helena got into a relationship with Tim Burton, an American director, having met him while filming for Planet of the Apes. They had two children before getting divorced in 2014. Since 2018, she is in a relationship with Rye Dag Holmboe, an art historian, who is 21 years younger than her.
