On the ramparts of Helm's Deep during the battle a one-eyed warrior turns to the camera, revealing his scarred, empty eye socket. The performer had come as an extra wearing an eye patch. Director Sir Peter Jackson politely asked to look beneath the patch, then enquired whether the man would be prepared to appear in the film without it. He was hesitant at first and felt quite self-conscious, but afterwards said the experience had made him more comfortable with his condition.
The confrontation between Frodo and the winged Nazgûl presents a significant inconsistency within the film's narrative. The primary aim of the Fellowship's mission was to keep Sauron uncertain about the location of the Ring, thereby diverting his attention away from it as it was moved closer to Mordor. This strategy was essential for the quest's success. Up until that moment, Sauron believed the Ring to be lost somewhere in the Shire, with no evidence to suggest otherwise. However, placing Frodo directly in front of a Nazgûl in Osgiliath, just as he is about to don the Ring, would undoubtedly alert Sauron to the fact that not only has the Ring been discovered, but it is also in Gondor and alarmingly close to his domain. Consequently, Sauron would have likely unleashed the full might of his armies upon Gondor to retrieve the Ring, which would have led to the swift failure of the war effort.
